Description
Succulent in Granulating Watercolor, by Conni Schaftenaar
This past week in watercolor class we did a small study of a succulent painted primarily with "granulating" watercolors. The loveliness of granulating colors is that the coarser grains of pigment settle across a wash area. If you look closely at the individual petals, you'll see the texture that granulation adds. Each petal was wet with clear water, then touched with two or three granulating colors that were allowed to settle. A little cleanup around the white petal edges, and it was done!
Granulating colors lift easily, also, which makes them both fun and challenging to use.
I was using a sheet of Arches Rough watercolor paper - the rough texture enhances the settling of the granulation, although it works well on other papers, too!
Photo was acquired by our instructor on a Facebook page with free images for artists.

thanks so much, Hazel! If you search "granulating watercolors" on YouTube, you'll find some really nice demo pieces by watercolorists! Most of them explain the whats and whys and hows of using granulating colors. Many basic watercolors ARE granulating, so being aware of that when you are painting is a real help.
