Artist Bio

Conni Schaftenaar My name is Conni Schaftenaar. I have had a life-long love of colorful art but always imagined that I wasn't talented enough to be someone who actually produced art that others liked. I began to learn some techniques from a watercolor instructor back in 2013, and I've been continuing the learning process ever since. I have had much joy in the comments and communications on FAA with other artists about my art, finding out that OTHER PEOPLE actually like my art! It's been a huge confidence booster to me to get that positive feedback, and I really appreciate it.

I primarily paint in watercolor on various substrates - watercolor paper, rice papers, tissue paper, and Yupo. I also do some work in alcohol ink, which is a medium that seems to allow me to let myself not be so 'controlled', as controlling alcohol ink is sort of a pipe dream. I also have gotten very interested in various forms of 3D and experimental art and have a few items on my FAA gallery that show some of the successful experiments. I like to share techniques with other artists.

I am honored and humbled to have been the FAA Tony Award Winner for February 2020 as Artist of the Month - wow!

I live on a farm in West Michigan and I love to take photos of our animals (horses, turkeys, pigs, chickens, cats & dogs), and I have done a few paintings from those images. I also love to photograph flowers, trees and interesting plants, and sunrises, sunsets and beautiful cloud formations. I have done many paintings of some of those as well. I have a shop on Etsy under the name of The Elderberry Blossom (one of my favorite wildflowers!), where I sell cards, calendars and other items I come up with.

I am a nearly life-long horseback rider and my favorite 'day off' activity is to go trail riding. I love to crochet and create my own patterns. I'm trying to learn to knit, but haven't been very dedicated to that task!
