I have always loved the brilliant red/orange of sumac trees in the fall, when the leaves attain nearly the same red as the beautiful and strange seed or fruit heads. Growing up, there was a hardwood woods behind us with oak, maple and beech trees. Growing up at the front edge, facing the back of our house, was a stand of sumac that had shorter, younger trees sloping up to taller, older trees against the hardwoods. That bank of color in the fall was positively breathtaking.
