Description

This painting is based on a dream I had (reference my digital painting on my gallery, also) of a sailboat on a red/orange ocean against a red/orange sunset sky. In my dream, the boat was simply darker red than the water and the sky - I did not feel that would render well in watercolor, so I used a dark mix to create the boat silhouette and shadow. As a West Michigan resident nearly my whole life, I've greatly enjoyed seeing beautiful sailboats on the waters of Lake Michigan and Lake Macatawa, so the dream image really resonated with me, even though I am not a sailor myself! Would love to know your thoughts on this piece!

I achieved the rippling water on this piece by crinkling only the bottom half-plus of the Masa paper to crack the sizing on the front side, allowing red and orange paint from the back side to show through in dark, horizontal "crackles" on the front side. More red and orange on the front side, together with a few strokes of darker paint to enhance that ripple effect.
