Elderberry Blossom in Ink/Gouache Resist and Watercolor, by Conni Schaftenaar
This is a painting I had started a couple of years ago and never finished until last week. It is done with painting layers of white gouache where you want to protect areas of paper - you can do single layers where you want some shadowing, and multiple layers where you want to protect white or almost white areas. You then coat the whole paper with black India ink and let it dry.
After the ink is dried, you wash off the gouache and are left with a black and white image of whatever you set out to paint. You can leave it at that, or you can then use watercolor or other liquid media to add color.
In this one, I used watercolor and I used a Micron pen to pick out the tiny little flowers that make up the larger elderberry blossom umbrella-shaped cluster.

I have had much joy in the comments and communications on FAA with other artists about my art, finding out that OTHER PEOPLE actually like my art! It's been a huge confidence booster to me to get that positive feedback, and I really appreciate it. I primarily paint in watercolor on various...
