Abstract Wild Green Poppy Watercolor on Yupo, by Conni Schaftenaar
This began as a couple of blues (Prussian and Ultramarine, and maybe some Cerulean) flooded onto a sheet of Yupo. A sheet of plastic wrap was laid on, scrunched around to make that lovely stained glass look on the background and dried thoroughly. That took a couple of days!
Then, I drew the poppy flower, buds and leaves on the background. I simply painted Sap Green over the stems and leaves and the pod side of the buds. For the flower petals and the nearly-ready-to-open buds, I wet the area (one petal at a time), lifting out some, but not all of the blue, then added small amounts of Aureolin Yellow, which mixed with the remnants of blues to create those lovely greens. The seed center of the blossom was tiny amounts of Prussian Blue applied with a cotton swab, daubing the color on.
I love painting on Yupo, because it allows me to be more "loose" in my approach, something I have not been able to total...
Thank you for visiting my FAA/Pixels gallery! Please note that the FAA watermark you'll see on images does NOT print on anything. My name is Conni Schaftenaar. I have had a life-long love of colorful art but always imagined that I wasn't talented enough to be someone who actually produced art that others liked. I began to learn some techniques from a watercolor instructor back in 2013, and I've been continuing the learning process ever since. I have had much joy in the comments and communications on FAA with other artists about my art, finding out that OTHER PEOPLE actually like my art! It's been a huge confidence booster to me to get that positive feedback, and I really appreciate it. I primarily paint in watercolor on various...

Thanks, Megan! The background effects are from putting down wet watercolor on a sheet of Yupo, then scrunching plastic wrap across it, manipulating the ripples and scrunches until I like what I think it will look like when dry. Then, Yupo being a sheet of plastic, basically, I can lift out the background color and put in the new color. I drew the flower in so I'd know where to work the lifting magic, and added in yellow over top of some of the remaining blue, to get that green. Pretty simple, really!
