Hahahahahaha! Yes, fresh tomatoes that are grown in good organic manure taste BETTER, don't they? Thanks Laurel!

Conni...you are owning this contest, girl...go girl!...v...best to you P.S. Pépère ALWAYS ended the year’s garden with tilling “cow tea” down into his garden soil and letting it “rest” thru winter...his Veges ...especially tomatoes were LEGENDARY!....to this day, I can immediately taste a “cow tea tomato”...much to my farm friends’ delight! How does that city girl...?? Yeah, I went to the country every chance I got!

Conni, WHAT A BEAUTIFUL POTATO PLANT...I well remember these lovelies from my pépère’s vegetable and flower gardens! He knew which plants needed marigolds or scallions or garlic or lavender to discourage insects...it was a Saturday morning treat to walk with him and view the gardens. How common it was to see cabbages and lettuces blooming alongside seasonal perrenial and annuals. My mémère would make amazing meals from stuffed squash blossoms in early summer. Thank you for this BEAUTIFUL artistic reminder!

These potato plants bloomed that year because I had hauled around some well-aged manure from the back of the barn - I had never had potato plants get blooms before and I was just stunned at how beautiful those little blossoms were! Thanks for your comment - I adore my squash and pumpkin blossoms, also - such floral beauty from the veggie side!

Artist's Description

White garden blossoms watercolor on paper, by Conni Schaftenaar.

I took a photo several years ago of blossoms in my vegetable garden on our farm in West Michigan - can you guess what vegetable they are?

The photo I took is shown elsewhere on my gallery, and I decided to try to paint it in watercolor on masa paper, which allows you to create a "faux batik" look.

I crumpled the masa paper up, soaked it in water, spread it out, and painted the back (fuzzy side) with greens and blues, which seeped into the cracks made by crumpling the paper. Once that was done, I glued the masa paper (right side up) to a backer sheet, and the dark "cracks" showed through the translucent masa nicely. After the sheet dried thoroughly, I then drew my image from the photo and began painting on the front (smooth) side of the masa. Using both negative and positive painting techniques, this is the result. Hope you enjoy it!

BTW, the garden blossoms were on a flourishing potato plant...

About Conni Schaftenaar

Conni Schaftenaar

Thank you for visiting my FAA/Pixels gallery! Please note that the FAA watermark you'll see on images does NOT print on anything. My name is Conni Schaftenaar. I have had a life-long love of colorful art but always imagined that I wasn't talented enough to be someone who actually produced art that others liked. I began to learn some techniques from a watercolor instructor back in 2013, and I've been continuing the learning process ever since. I have had much joy in the comments and communications on FAA with other artists about my art, finding out that OTHER PEOPLE actually like my art! It's been a huge confidence booster to me to get that positive feedback, and I really appreciate it. I primarily paint in watercolor on various...
