Watercolor painting of Bass Harbor Light, by Conni Schaftenaar.
This was painted as part of a watercolor class project - our instructor took a photo years ago of a lighthouse perched on a rocky hillside in Maine (Bass Harbor Light on the Acadia National Park island) on a gray, overcast day. The lighthouse was white, but the overcast nature of the day meant no color in the sky, no interesting shadows or clouds, etc. She challenged us to paint a brighter, more golden scene using whatever elements from her photo we liked. So in my painting, the sun rising in the east is casting a golden glow over the building and its surrounding hillsides, under a brighter, more colorful and interesting sky.
