Description
Watercolor painting of wild morning glories by Conni Schaftenaar.
Every year bindweed, AKA wild morning glories (Convolvulaceae) grows around our training pen on our farm in West Michigan. My husband hates it for the invasive weedy plant that it is, but I love the beautiful little morning-glory-like flowers it grows, and the lovely arrow-shaped leaves. I try to get photos of it before he tries to kill it off for the season - sometimes it's a race!
I painted this using a combination of negative and positive painting techniques, layering leaves over a light green background, building darker ones behind lighter ones. Then the flowers were done using positive painting, adding shading, shadows, and tints of the pink these lovely little flowers have.

Conni, this foray into some of your earlier work is making my heArt smile!…with a high of 12 degrees predicted in bluegrass future, I am warming my thoughts today!

I really, really like this one Conni. The pale flowers against the pattern of the leaves make a striking painting! l/f

Wow, so nice of you to say, Laurel! I really struggled with the look of the flowers on this one - one of my earliest attempts at painting a "white" flower, which is a challenge. Thanks so much!

Conni, in my humble opinion: “Georgia” might have been “a bit green” over these pastel posies too! ...while I have always admired her work, hers is much heavier than YOUR delicate, light infused florals. I am SO hoping for more of these amazing BEAUTIES!...the Light, the Petals...you really do such glorious floral tangles!...not an easy feat! BRAVA!
