Painting - Watercolor On Gessoed Paper
Description
Blue-Green Abstract watercolor on textured gesso, by Conni Schaftenaar
Another summer adventure in art class - putting gesso on watercolor paper, adding texture, and then painting. I have done two - the first is a painting of garden blossoms done in a negative/positive technique. I'm not ecstatic over it.
However, this one, which began life to be an abstract background for something else, ended up being its own image. I had experimented with lifting out some of the color from the gessoed surface, but felt I was merely mucking up a great abstract image, so I stopped and filled back in. For the texture in this image, which I really like, I had applied gesso to a sheet of inexpensive watercolor paper and immediately laid a sheet of plastic wrap over it, squishing and scrunching the plastic wrap, moving the gesso around. I then carefully lifted off the plastic wrap and let the gessoed sheet dry before beginning to apply the colors.
I used poured colors and a sponge to get this effect - ultramarine blue and sap green, which I think are fabulous together and make a wonderful teal in the spaces where they truly mingle. After the original pouring had dried, I used a sea sponge (how appropriate!) to lift out some more highlights and expose a little more of some of the great texturing effects of the plastic wrap. I think it looks like a deep sea image with interesting seaweeds growing hither and yon.

Just saw this in the Midwest America Artist group discussion - neat effect, Connie!

Thanks, Sonja! it's pretty cool how you can make textures in the gesso coating that come through into the painting! Fun stuff!
