Description
Quilting My Past, Recycling My Dreams Tulip Collage, paper collage on black canvas, by Conni Schaftenaar
Over many years, I have put my art on greeting cards and annual calendars, originally done as gifts to clients of my marketing business. I took sample prints and left over printed materials from some of these items and cut petal shapes, combined them into tulips, made stems and leaves, and mounted everything on a black canvas on which I created a "quilted" background". The tulips, stems, and leaves all have "quilting" stitches on them, and look like an appliqué on the top of a black quilt. It was fun to make, and I've made another companion piece to it in other colors! The two together would make a great diptych! Hope you enjoy it. I used matte medium for the mounting of all the pieces, and then coated the whole piece with liquid matte medium. All of the printed pieces are from my original art - some watercolor paintings, some alcohol ink paintings, some digital art created from scans of my hand art, using Photoshop to manipulate the image. This was a challenge to me because it's my first major collage work that required first the "vision", and then experimenting with techniques to pull it off.
I entered this in a contest by the group The ARTIST BUZzz and participated in the discussion in the contest that required a haiku about the art - here's what I wrote:
Tulips dance, quilt dreams
Paper petals bow and pose.
Re-use, re-purpose!
