Description
Yellow iris in the style of Georgia O'Keeffe, watercolor on paper, by Conni Schaftenaar.
Recently the artist guild to which I belong had as the work topic of our meeting to paint in the style of a favorite major artist. I chose Georgia, because I love to paint flowers and I LOVE her floral watercolors. I have a long way to go, so I titled this Ode to Georgia 4, and I'm doing some more to try to get just a little closer in style to this master of the medium! I hope you enjoy this and find it an acceptable first step in my quest!
I used granulating colors (a blend of Sap, Burnt Sienna, and a little Ultramarine Blue) in the background and did negative painting around some leaves and lifted out some grasses and leaves around the flower.
Reference photo was taken in my flower garden by my friend Crystal, who has generously given me permission to use her photo for paintings. The original photo was of a typical blue iris. I have used that photo for a Photoshop-manipulated image that's on my gallery called Neon Iris, and for a watercolor painting in blues and purples, also on my gallery, that's called Iris Lace. This has been a useful reference photo!
This painting is a 4x6, destined to be one of my submissions in an upcoming Postcard Salon in the Muskegon Art Museum.
UPDATE: Due to Covid in 2020, the Postcard Salon this was created for was canceled. However, this year, I submitted to another postcard exhibition in Caledonia MI, hosted by the local library, and this card, along with some others I submitted, sold! Thanks to the buyer and I hope you enjoy this glowing beauty!
