Forsythia in bloom, watercolor on paper, by Conni Schaftenaar.
Forsythia has been a favorite of mine ever since I once had a small house with three forsythia shrubs. Each spring when they bloomed, I would arrive home from work in the early evening, sun still out but sky just beginning to darken. The yellow of the blossoms seemed to simply GLOW out of the darker background.
This is my fourth attempt to capture the glow of those amazing yellow flowers against a purpling sky. I poured the background after sketching and masking the forsythia shrub - Pthalo Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Aureolin Yellow, Dioxazene Violet in the background. After removing masking, I used Aureolin and a touch of Gamboge to create the blossoms.

I have had much joy in the comments and communications on FAA with other artists about my art, finding out that OTHER PEOPLE actually like my art! It's been a huge confidence booster to me to get that positive feedback, and I really appreciate it. I primarily paint in watercolor on various...
