Description
Watercolor painting of an elderberry blossom, by Conni Schaftenaar.
I keep going back to an old photo I took several years ago of an absolutely huge, "frothy" elderberry blossom on a wild shrub growing by our barn. It was such an enormous, perfect bloom, I keep playing with it in different ways. You can see the photo itself, and a filtered Photoshopped version of that photo elsewhere on my gallery, but for this, I created a background that is very abstract and then suspended that one perfect flower over it, using masque to keep my leaves and blossom area white so I could flood and paint on the background before removing the masque to finish the leaves and highlights/low lights in the blossom itself, using transparent and semi-transparent watercolor paints for the painting.

Conni, I went into your portfolio today to see if you posted your new work and I was mesmerized by the beauty you’ve rearranged. Everything is EXCITING and has a fresh look with the rearrangement…I am again reminded of the mastery of so many media including the delicate Japanese papers…this watercolour beauty is so beautifully offered against a color block background and…I find it to be magical!

Love the processing on this image, Conni! The textures are very nice, and I love the patriotic look of it with your color choices! Congratulations on all your features! l/f
Conni Schaftenaar replied:
Thanks, Marian - appreciate your L/F! This is actually a painting using a photo I took as a reference - no processing on this one! I do like to play in Photoshop with my photos, however, and I have the photo on which this painting is based in it's "natural" state and another version with some filters applied as well, in my galleries.
