Description
A tiny orange-red wild columbine dangles from its fragile stem among purple-blue iris petals, colored pencil by Conni Schaftenaar.
Many years ago, some wild columbine appears in my flower/perennial beds. The original visitors were ivory white, and totally beautiful. I made sure to leave them alone when weeding, and over several years they multiplied until there were a half-dozen good-sized plants early every summer. Then one year, there was an orange one. I said, "hmmm". Then over the next couple of years, the white ones disappeared and more and more orange ones appeared. I miss having the beautiful white ones, but these red-orange ones grow along the house foundation and among my purple-blue irises and are also lovely. The complex blossoms fascinate me - they are so small, you really don't see that detail unless you get right down on their level. I decided to tackle drawing one with colored pencil, another (recent) fascination of mine. I had some great close-up photos of columbines, and I decided to add in the purple iris petals and iris leaves to create the backdrop.
Aquilegia canadensis, the Canadian or Canada columbine, eastern red columbine, or wild columbine, is a species of flowering plant in the buttercup family Ranunculaceae. It is an herbaceous perennial native to woodland and rocky slopes in eastern North America, prized for its red and yellow flowers. (Wikipedia)

Thanks, Basant - next spring, I will gather some of the columbine blossoms and try drying them. They were gone this spring before you told me they could be effectively dried and used. Appreciate it!

Thanks so much, Basant - interesting idea to try drying some of these - I've dried many other plant materials, but would have thought these tiny blossoms were too delicate. I'll have to try it!
