Barberry Shrub with Buds in the Spring, colored pencil on Duralar by Conni Schaftenaar.
Wandering around my front flower/perennial beds this year, I happened to see tiny, tiny little red buds nestled in the leaves of my barberry shrubs. I took a bunch of photos, because they were so very tiny and pretty - dark red in the deeper red/purple leaves. I grabbed a macro shot and decided to render it in colored pencil on Duralar. These tiny little buds eventually opened to reveal tiny little flowers that were almost chartreuse - a green/yellow, which surprised me, given the red outer husk! The flowers are so tiny that when you look at the shrub from even a few feet away, you are aware of little spots of lighter color, the yellow/green, but it doesn't look like a flowering shrub. I've had those shrubs for years and never noticed those tiny little buds or flowers before!
After scanning the drawing at this stage, I then added a misty background using watercolor pencil and activating it to flow and run. That version of the image is also on my gallery.
