Artist's Description

Photo of 3-dimensional apples done in watercolor and copper wire over watercolor painting background, by Conni Schaftenaar.

This is a photograph of my entry this year in the Festival of the Arts juried competition in Grand Rapids, MI. I was lucky to be one of the 230 or so artists to have a piece accepted out of close to 500 submissions.

I like to experiment with materials, how I combine them, shape them, colorize them. This experimental piece grew out of learning how to make layered pieces of watercolor painting into jewelry - I decided to make apples!

This piece is 3 dimensional - the whole assembly is mounted in a shadow box. The main flat image is watercolor painted on watercolor canvas (a gesso'd surface), and the 3D apples and leaves are painted on watercolor paper. The far background is watercolor painted on white mat board, which I added when the rest was done, realizing that the canvas isolated on the plain black background of the shadow box looked odd.<...

It's been a huge confidence booster to me to get that positive feedback, and I really appreciate it. I primarily paint in watercolor on various...
